Shared Documents/My Network Places Problems?
Yesterday, when I opened My Network Places and clicked on one of these folders to open it they all vanished. The icon for My Network Places also disappeared on my Start menu on the right side where icons for My Documents, My Computer, My Recent Documents, etc. are also located. I still can access My Network Places by going to My Computer and then clicking My Network Places on the left side of the screen but again the folder is blank and has none of the shared folders from the desktop in it.
So, does anybody have any clues of what could have went wrong and caused this? Does anybody have any ideas of how to fix this problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.
They network connection may be at fault, The firewall on the desktop may have been changed to block file and printer sharing, or the sharing may have been turned of. Try going to start/run, type in cmd and enter, then try ping thenameofthedesktop and enter. If this does not work and you know it's ip address try ping ipaddressofdesktop. Can the other laptops see the files, also if this is a Vista machine look at the advanced tcp/ip settings of your connection. Make sure netbios over tcp/ip is turned on.
Right click the Start Menu and choose Properties. Click on Customize and see if there is a box to Show Network Places or Expand Network Places, and check it.
Not sure if that will work, but it's my only suggestion
So long as Both Computers are Started Up, and both Have the Documents as Network Places, then the Document folders should Still be there, otherwise, look at what you did, and see what steps need to be redone and double check them
