What is a good (small) file format for me to save my DVD's and stream them to any computer on my network?

Also what program should I use to easily convert/encode to this format? Preferably Free...
If it is on your own Local Area Network, it really wouldn't matter what format you used. The network is so fast you wouldn't need to "stream" it at all. With streaming being downloading a buffer of the movie before playing and continuing to download while watching it, there would be no need. The file would be transferred quite rapidly and could be watched immediately.
