I recently graduated from UT Austin with a degree in biochemistry with hopes of going to dental school. My first attempt didn't work out but I have recently been admitted to a post-bac program that has a proven track record (80% success rate) of getting students like myself into dental and medical schools. So it would take 2 yrs of that plus 4 yrs of dental school. However I currently have a great job doing finance, and also got accepted to an evening MBA program in Dallas (I applied to both schools at the same time). I'm completely torn between the two options but have to make a decision soon. Obviously a career in dentistry would be a much better decision financially, but a much harder road to complete. I just think moving away from friends and family for 6 years while accumulating debt would be tough, but the pay-off would be huge (my dentist wants me to take over his practice). Anyone out there that was in a similar position as mine, or anyone have any advice to offer? Thanks!
OK, you've given two reasons for wanting to be a dentist--money and your dentist wants you to take over his practice. Anything else? You like teeth? You want to lessen people's pain? You think x-rays are awesome? I'm thinking dentistry isn't something you get into for the money...I'm thinking finance is something you get into for the money.
My initial impression would be for you to follow the former, but convincing me to follow the latter wouldn't be too difficult! You win either way, really! *grin* Good luck, and may the FORCE be with you!
Honestly, I would go with the MBA. If you say your finance job is great, then you obviously like it. I am not sure why you think you'd make more money as a dentist, but in aggregate, with all the bills plus time to get your practice going, you'd be better off in finance. Besides, with an MBA, the world's wide open, you can do practically anything business-related. Also, are you sure your dentist will wait for you for six years? A lot can change in that time. I wouldn't count on it.
